The Notes: Week of November 29 - December 3, 2021

Hi, Neighbors!  I hope yours was a pleasant Thanksgiving and long weekend filled with friends and family and love.  And congratulations!  We've done it!  We've gotten through the first of the holidays this holiday season and we'll meet December 2021 head-on this week.  How did that happen?!

December 1, 2021, is the first day in which citizens can declare candidacy for Appleton Common Council member seats.  In the upcoming April 2022 election, the council seats of the even numbered districts of the newly redistricted city are up for election.  If you have friends and family members in even numbered districts of the city who are willing to share their time and talents on the common council, please encourage them to get nominations signatures in before the 01/04/2022 deadline and give themselves the opportunity to be elected to serve their neighbors for a two-year term.  I would be happy to talk with, answer questions of, or assist anyone who has a willingness and interest in serving on the council so you can refer any even-numbered-district friends of yours to me if they would like more information.

The upcoming city government week -- Full Council Week -- is a sparse schedule of just two meetings, both on Wednesday, 12/01/2021.  Here's what we can expect:

Appleton Public Arts Committee - 8:30am: For a few meetings now, this committee has been trying to determine what photos will grace the welcome tower in Houdini Square.  At their 11/03/2021 meeting, they decided to use professional photographic images from the 2021 Rhythms of the World event and selected a "top picks" listing of the photos from which they would choose.  The action item on this meeting's agenda requires this committee to make the final selections.  Please see this document if you're interested in what options are before the committee members.  The committee has decided that a public photo contest will take place the next time the welcome tower images are up for a change.

Common Council - 7pm: Despite only a couple committee meetings last week, the full council will meet this Wednesday.  The agenda holds a couple action items for council approval, one mayoral proclamation, and the usual COVID-19 report from the city's interim health officer.  There is one public hearing open for discussion (if there is any to be had) on the rezoning of the Spartan Drive road right-of-way property that was just annexed from the Town of Grand Chute into the city.  The items up for full council approval were mentioned briefly in last week's blog post but I'm afraid there's not much of grave consequence to be discussed in this blog post.

So, Neighbors, if you tuned in today for some scintillating reading about City of Appleton government actions, I'm sorry to disappoint.  Next week's Committee Week blog post should prove to be a bit more exciting.  But I make no promises. 😁

I hope your week ahead is a great one!
