The Notes: Week of May 29 - June 2, 2023

Hello, Neighbors!  I hope this Memorial Day weekend is treating you well thus far.

This coming week is Fifth Week in City of Appleton government.  As such, all of the business that was discussed last week in Committee Meetings Week will be on a brief hold until the first week of June.

There is one meeting scheduled for this week -- the Library Board's Finance Committee will meet on Wednesday, 05/31/2023, at 8:30am at the library's temporary location on Kensington Drive.  Committee members will review the library financial policy, financial reports, and discuss the budget process for the library.  There are no action items on this meeting's agenda.

The most important thing this week is the observance of Memorial Day in the city.

Here are the details regarding the Monday, 05/29/2023, City of Appleton events:

The Appleton Memorial Day Parade steps off at 9am on Monday.  This site contains information on the starting place and route of the parade.  The parade concludes at the entrance to Riverside Cemetery on the city's east side.

At Riverside Cemetery, there will be a "Moment of Remembrance" and a short second ceremony.  Details regarding these ceremonies can also be found on this site.  American flag etiquette is also detailed here on the Facebook page for the parade.

I hope that you will take some time during your long holiday weekend to observe the parade and/or the remembrance ceremonies to follow.  There are many other local observances honoring fallen veterans in nearby municipalities as well.  If you're unable to attend any, I encourage you to take at least a moment on this Memorial Day to honor all soldiers and servicemen who have died in service to the United States of America.  In 2000, the National Moment of Remembrance Act was signed into law.  It encourages all of us to pause at 3pm local time on Memorial Day for one minute of silence.  In the spirit of thanksgiving for all those lost in service to us and our country, let's all try to hold fast to this request.

I wish you all a blessed and beautiful Memorial Day and hope that you will return to this blog next week for more local government happenings.
